Perfect Smile

General Dentistry

Our general dentistry services form the foundation of your oral health. We focus on preventive care to help you avoid dental problems and maintain a healthy smile for life.

  • What happens at a routine dental check-up?

If it is your first appointment at the practice, your dentist will take a full dental and medical history. They will also:

    • Thoroughly examine your teeth, gums and mouth.

    • Take X-rays if necessary.

    • Discuss any dental problems you may have

    • Discuss general health and dietary issues that can affect your teeth and gums – such as alcohol consumption or smoking.

    • Discuss your teeth-cleaning habits, such as brushing technique, and recommend any improvements such as interdental brushes or flossing as required.

    • Explain any further treatment you may need, such as fillings, root canal treatment or hygienist appointments.

    • Provide you with a full treatment plan.

    • Answer any questions you may have regarding your treatment and what options are available.

    • If you require no other treatment, your dentist will let you know when you should come for your next routine check-up.

  • Regular dental checkups are the cornerstone of maintaining optimal oral health. We emphasize the importance of these routine visits as they play a crucial role in preventing dental issues before they become more serious.

    • Hygienist treatment is delivered by a specially trained dental hygienist or therapist  who will help to remove any hard-to-reach plaque from your teeth that may have built up over time.

    • Your teeth and gums will be assessed to check the amount of plaque removal you will need and risk factors will be highlighted.

    • Your teeth will be professionally cleaned with special equipment and paste. This process is also known as scaling and polishing.

    • The hygienist's role is to show you how to look after your teeth so that they remain free from plaque in the future. You will be advised on the best tooth brushing technique and given tips on flossing and using interdental brushes.

    • Dental hygiene at our practice also functions as preventing  gum disease and bad breath. If you have a bridge, denture, orthodontic treatment or a dental implant you will have specific needs that the hygienist will be able to assist you with.

    • It is recommended that you come in for regular hygiene appointments to ensure your mouth stays clean and healthy.

    • This involves removing a very damaged tooth from the jaw bone.

    • Some patients may also develop impacted wisdom teeth, which can cause pain. This is alleviated by having them removed surgically.

    • One area in which it is possible for dentists to specialise is oral surgery, for all dental procedures involving surgery, such as the extraction of teeth or wisdom teeth. It is always important to get the advice of a dental professional

Root Canal

Restorative Dentistry

When dental issues arise, our restorative services are here to repair and renew your smile, restoring both function and aesthetics.

    • If you require a filling in your tooth, a cosmetic option would be to choose a white filling material that matches the shade of your surrounding natural teeth. You can also have any existing metallic fillings replaced with tooth-coloured or 'white' fillings.

    • This is a safe procedure that entails the removal of any decay from your tooth, and the removal of the old filling.

    • The new filling is made from a very hard tooth-coloured substance and will withstand the chewing forces in your mouth.

    • The restoration is completed in one visit and your fillings will not be visible when you smile.

  • Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected through tooth decay or damaged by an injury to your mouth. This infection may spread through the root canal system and could eventually lead to an abscess, causing a great deal of discomfort. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the tooth may need to be taken out.

    • Root canal therapy involves the following:

    • Local anaesthetic will be administered to ensure no discomfort is felt during treatment.

    • The tooth will be prepared using a drill, allowing access to the root canal system.

    • The root canal system will be thoroughly cleaned to remove all infection and pulp.

    • The root canal system is then filled and sealed temporarily.

    • The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared and the tooth is permanently filled.

    • Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure and most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits.

    BENEFITS

    • Preservation of remaining healthy tooth structure.

    • Prevention of infection spreading any further.

    • Restoration of tooth to its natural look and feel.

  • This is a type of dental procedure used to restore teeth that have been broken, weakened by decay or contain a very large filling

    • If required a local anesthetic is administered.

    • The tooth is prepared for the crown and a temporary crown is fitted.

    • An impression is taken of the tooth.

    • A crown is made in the dental laboratory to fit the tooth precisely and match the neighbouring teeth.

    • Once received from the lab the crown is fitted.

    • A crown is a good solution when a tooth has been significantly damaged due to decay and trauma. Crowns can be used to replace these to give you a more appealing smile. Additionally, if you have had root canal treatment you will need a crown to protect or cap the restored tooth.

    Benefits

    • Strengthens remaining tooth structure.

    • Natural-looking restoration.

    • Functions like a real tooth, so you can bite and chew as usual.

    • Bridges are usually made of a precious metal base, which gives them a solid structure and makes them hard-wearing. If you need a bridge in your smile line, porcelain is usually added to the base to make it look more like real teeth.

    • A bridge helps to strengthen the prepared teeth and makes chewing and eating easier because they are fixed and can't come out.

    • Some bridges can also be fixed to your jaw with dental implants, if you have several teeth next to each other that are missing.

    • Once you have a bridge fitted, you will have to take extra care during your daily hygiene regime to ensure it stays plaque free and does not cause bad breath.

    • Dentures are  made from hard-wearing material that look like teeth and gums to give your mouth a natural appearance.

    • Impressions are taken and  a denture is designed by a dental laboratory.

    • Dentures are made to fit snugly on your gums and you will be able to remove them for cleaning.

    • Wearing a denture for the first time may take some getting used to when speaking or eating and chewing. It is important that you take extra care with your hygiene regime so that you can avoid bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease. The hygienist will be able to show you how to best take care of your denture and gums and will tell you about specialised brushes.

    • If you have loose or ill-fitting dentures, your ability to eat and speak may become affected.

    • There is now a procedure whereby your denture can be fixed to your jaw with dental implants. This treatment is known as implant overdentures or denture stabilisation and offers patients with dentures a more permanent solution improving quality of life significantly. You are able to enjoy your favourite foods again and feel comfortable smiling, safe in the knowledge that your dentures are staying put.

    • Bridges and dentures are not the only solution of missing teeth  thanks to advances in modern dentistry. Have you heard of dental implants? Implant dentistry offers a clinically proven and safe solution to getting a great smile back and being able to bite and chew with confidence.

    • Dental implants are small metal screws that are placed in the jaw in place of a missing tooth.

    • Once established, crowns, bridges and dentures can be fixed onto the implants, creating a natural-looking and stable restoration.

Teeth Whitening

Cosmetic Dentistry

Enhance your smile with our cosmetic dentistry services, designed to improve the appearance of your teeth and boost your confidence.

    • If you are self-conscious about the colour of your teeth or if you have staining on some of your teeth, professional teeth whitening treatment is a safe and recommended option for you to consider.

    • You will be assessed for the type of staining your teeth have.

    • A custom tray is made to fit snugly over your teeth.

    • Home teeth whitening kits are  available to lighten the teeth  gradually. In this case, the trays with bleaching agent  are  worn overnight. With all whitening treatment, individual results will vary and are dependant on your initial tooth colour and the nature of your tooth staining.

    • Veneers are a good treatment option to consider when teeth are stained or chipped because they look like natural teeth and don't require a major procedure. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps when braces are not suitable.

    • A veneer is a thin, tooth-coloured piece of porcelain (like a false finger nail, but more durable) that is bonded on top of your  tooth.

    • The shape and size of the veneers can be adjusted to make your teeth look longer or closer together.

    • Composite bonding is a popular cosmetic dental treatment that is used to improve the shape, colour and overall appearance of patients' teeth. It uses the same resin material used for white fillings, and is most frequently used on the front teeth that show during smiling.

    • Composite bonding can be used for disguise minor imperfections in the front teeth, closing small gaps and hiding minor tooth rotations, with no damage to your teeth.

    • Composite bonding is a pain-free procedure in most cases. Your dentist will be able to choose a shade of resin that closely matches the colour of your teeth, meaning that the results will look entirely natural.

    • The resin is carefully applied to your teeth, with no need for any work or damage to them.

    • Your dentist then carefully shapes and smooths the resin to hide any imperfections, for a result that looks entirely natural.

    • Once the resin has been shaped, it will be  hardened  quickly with the help of a special light.

    • Composite bonding treatment does not last as long as veneers but many patients find the treatment  highly cost-effective. It can also be repeated with no damage at all to your teeth.

Dental Work

Emergency Dentistry

When dental issues arise, our restorative services are here to repair and renew your smile, restoring both function and aesthetics.

    • This covers treatment for toothache due to infection, decay or an abscess, chipped or broken tooth, loose tooth and knocked out tooth.

    • A thorough examination of the injured area will be undertaken. This may include dental x-rays to determine the extent of the damage.

    • Depending on the severity of the pain, the area will be numbed with local anaesthetic.

    • The damaged tooth will be restored temporarily or permanently, depending on the case.

    • The tooth may be removed and options will be discussed to replace.

    • If you require emergency dental treatment, you should ask to see a dentist as soon as possible. At our practice we offer appointments for all dental emergencies from toothache to lost or broken crowns, chipped teeth and fillings to abscesses, trauma, avulsed teeth and facial swelling. We can take care of your injuries to ensure you heal quicker and more effectively.
